Sprints and Shuttle Drills for Speed and Agility
At top AAA programs like the Bismarck Demons, speed and agility are crucial for cornerbacks and safeties. To improve these skills, we recommend the following drill: the 10-yard shuttle with a focus on reaction time and change of direction. Set up cones in a zig-zag pattern, 10 yards apart. Players will start at one end of the course and sprint to the first cone, then immediately change direction and sprint to the next cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include keeping the head up, staying low, and exploding out of the turn. This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time and the ability to quickly change direction on the field, making it essential for cornerbacks and safeties to excel in pass coverage and run support.
