Explosive Acceleration Drill for Running Backs

๐Ÿ“ Mandan BravesยทFriday, July 17, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At AA programs like the Mandan Braves, running backs need to be explosive and quick off the line of scrimmage. The 'L-Cone Shuttle' drill is a great way to improve acceleration and agility. Players will start in a 3-point stance behind an L-cone, then explosively accelerate around the cone and back to the starting position. Sets: 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps. Reps: 10-12 reps per set. Coaching cues: 'Explode off the line, stay low, and change direction quickly.' Why it translates to game performance: This drill simulates the quick changes of direction that running backs face on the field, improving their ability to accelerate and make cuts in tight spaces. This drill can be incorporated into a running back's off-season training program to improve their overall explosiveness and agility.
