Quarterback Quick Release Drill: Bellevue West Thunderbirds Style

๐Ÿ“ Bellevue West ThunderbirdsยทSunday, July 5, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

Bellevue West Thunderbirds quarterback coach, Mark Johnson, stresses the importance of a quick release in his QBs. To improve release time, Johnson implements the '3-Step Quick Release Drill'. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players start in a shotgun formation, 5 yards behind the center. On the coach's signal, they take 3 small steps forward, keeping their eyes downfield. As they reach the third step, they release the ball to a target, such as a receiver or a cone. Key coaching cues include 'eyes downfield', 'weight transfer', and 'follow through'. This drill translates to game performance by improving accuracy and reducing decision time under pressure.
