Thunderbird Trench Warfare: A Bellevue West OL Drill
This summer, Bellevue West Thunderbirds OL coach is putting his linemen through a grueling drill designed to improve their ability to anchor and explode off the line. The 'Thunderbird Trench Takedown' drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Players line up in a 4-point stance, with their feet shoulder-width apart and hands on the ground. On the whistle, they explosively drive their hands into the ground and push up to a 3-point stance, keeping their back straight and core engaged. Coach emphasizes the importance of 'locking out' their elbows and 'driving' their feet into the ground. This drill translates to game performance by improving OL's ability to quickly change direction and generate power at the point of attack. By mastering this drill, Thunderbird OL will be better equipped to take down defenders and clear a path for their RBs in the fall.
