Speed Separation Drill for Wide Receivers
At top programs like Millard South Patriots, wide receivers need to be able to separate from defenders at high speeds. To improve this skill, coaches can implement a speed separation drill. The drill involves setting up two cones 10 yards apart, with a defender at each cone. The receiver starts at the first cone, then sprints to the second cone while the defender tries to stay with them. The receiver must change direction quickly to separate from the defender. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'stay low' and 'keep your eyes up.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a receiver's ability to create separation and get open downfield, making them a more effective target for the quarterback.
