Game-Changing Drill for 5A DEs: 'Speed to Power'
For defensive ends at 5A programs like Los Lunas Tigers, building explosive power and speed is crucial. Introduce the 'Speed to Power' drill to enhance their game performance. This drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with 60 seconds rest between sets. Players start in a 3-point stance, then explosively drive forward 10 yards, immediately transitioning into a power position. As they reach the 10-yard mark, coaches shout 'Power!' and players must quickly change direction, driving their feet into the ground and generating force. Coaching cues include 'Fast feet, slow hands' and 'Drive, don't lift.' This drill translates to game performance by improving DEs' ability to quickly close gaps and generate pressure on the quarterback. By incorporating 'Speed to Power' into their pre-season training, 5A DEs can gain a competitive edge.
