Cibola Cougars Cornerback Drill: 'Mirror and Match'

๐Ÿ“ Cibola CougarsยทTuesday, July 21, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To improve reaction time and footwork for cornerbacks, Cibola Cougars' defensive coordinator, Alex Sanchez, recommends the 'Mirror and Match' drill. Divide the cornerbacks into pairs, with one player as the 'receiver' and the other as the 'corner.' The receiver will run a 5-yard out route, while the corner mirrors their every move, staying one step behind. After 3 sets of 10 reps, switch roles and repeat. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the receiver' and 'stay low, stay quick.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing cornerbacks to develop the ability to read the receiver's body language and react quickly to their movements. By mirroring the receiver, cornerbacks can improve their timing and anticipation, making them more effective in coverage.
