Unlocking Defensive End Potential: The 'Rip and Rebound' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Reno HuskiesยทThursday, July 2, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For 5A programs like the Reno Huskies, developing dominant defensive ends is crucial. To improve their pass rush and run-stopping abilities, coaches can implement the 'Rip and Rebound' drill. This drill focuses on explosive acceleration and counter-movement. Divide players into pairs, with one player as the defender and the other as the blocker. The defender starts in a 3-point stance, while the blocker lines up 5 yards away. On the whistle, the defender 'rips' forward, aiming to get past the blocker. As they hit the ground, they immediately 'rebound' back to their feet, using their counter-movement to regain balance. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include: 'Rip like a snake!' and 'Rebound like a cat!' This drill translates to game performance by improving the defender's ability to quickly change direction and recover, making them a more effective pass rusher and run-stopper.
