Unlocking Tight End Potential: The 'Y' Route Drill
At top 5A programs like Bishop Gorman Gaels, tight ends are a crucial component of the offense. To take their game to the next level, we're introducing the 'Y' Route Drill. This exercise targets the TE's ability to create separation and secure passes in traffic. Set up a 10-yard line with two cones 5 yards apart, spaced 3 yards from the line. The TE starts at the line, then runs a 5-yard 'Y' route, breaking off the corner and creating separation. The quarterback throws a 3-yard pass to the TE, who must secure the catch while being contacted. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Coaching cues: 'Keep your eyes on the quarterback,' 'Use your body to shield the defender,' and 'Catch with your hands, not your chest.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching TEs to create space and make plays in tight windows.
