Wildcat Block Party: A Drill for Dominant OL Play
At Springfield Wildcats' summer camp, our focus is on building a dominant OL unit. One key drill that's helping us achieve that goal is the 'Block Party' series. This 3-part drill targets footwork, hand placement, and power. Here's how to run it: Part 1: 'Footwork Frenzy' - 3 sets of 10 reps, 3 seconds per rep. Players start in a 3-point stance, taking 3 steps to the left and 3 steps to the right, focusing on quick, light feet. Part 2: 'Hand Placement' - 3 sets of 10 reps, 5 seconds per rep. Players practice placing their hands on a pad or partner, emphasizing proper hand positioning and driving through the ground. Part 3: 'Power Play' - 3 sets of 10 reps, 10 seconds per rep. Players explosively block a pad or partner, focusing on generating power from their legs and core. Coaching cues: 'Light feet, heavy hands' and 'Drive through the ground, not just the pad.' This drill translates to game performance by improving footwork, hand placement, and power, allowing OL players to dominate in the trenches.
