Building a Stronger Left Tackle: The 'Anchor and Punch' Drill
At top Div I programs like Mentor Cardinals, coaches are always looking for ways to improve their linemen's technique and strength. One effective drill for left tackles is the 'Anchor and Punch' exercise. This drill targets the player's ability to anchor themselves in the ground and generate power to punch the defender. To run the drill, have the player start in a three-point stance with their feet shoulder-width apart. On the whistle, they must drop their hips and drive their feet into the ground, keeping their back straight and core engaged. This is the 'anchor' phase. Next, they must quickly transition into a punch, extending their arm and driving their fist into a pad or bag. Aim for 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on proper form and technique. This drill translates to game performance by allowing left tackles to generate power and control in the trenches, making them nearly unstoppable.
