Stillwater Pioneers Defensive End Drill: 'Rush the Pocket'
The Stillwater Pioneers' defensive line coach has developed a drill to improve defensive end speed and agility. The 'Rush the Pocket' drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps. Players start 5 yards behind the quarterback, then sprint to the quarterback and back to the starting point. As they approach the quarterback, they must drop their hips and accelerate through the pocket, mimicking a pass rush. Coaching cues include 'hinge and fire' to emphasize hip rotation and 'explosive finish' to encourage maximum speed. This drill translates to game performance by improving a defensive end's ability to quickly close the gap and disrupt the quarterback's timing. It also enhances agility and reaction time, allowing them to adapt to different blocking schemes.
