Shut Down the Edge: A 5A Secondary Drill for Stillwater Pioneers and Beyond
This drill, dubbed 'Edge Elimination,' targets the secondary's ability to shut down the opponent's edge receivers. Divide your S players into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. Set up a 10-yard course with two cones 5 yards apart, representing the edge. The receiver will start at the first cone, and the defender will start at the second cone. On the whistle, the receiver will sprint to the second cone, and the defender must react and get their hands on the receiver. The drill will be run for 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 2-minute rest in between. Coaching cues include 'stay low' and 'keep your eyes on the receiver.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the secondary's reaction time and ability to shut down the opponent's edge receivers.
