Spartan Shutdown: CB Drill for 5A Programs

๐Ÿ“ Bixby SpartansยทThursday, July 16, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To dominate the 5A landscape, cornerbacks need to be able to shut down receivers in space. The 'Spartan Shutdown' drill is designed to improve CBs' ability to stay with receivers off the line and make plays on the ball. Set up a series of 3 cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Have the CB start at the first cone and focus on staying low, with feet shoulder-width apart. As the coach or trainer releases the ball, the CB must quickly change direction and close on the ball. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'stay low,' 'inside foot,' and 'eyes on the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to quickly change direction and stay with receivers in space.
