FridayNightPulse Training Tip: RB Power Through Contact Drill
At 6A programs like West Linn Lions, running backs need to be able to power through contact to break tackles and gain extra yards. To improve this skill, we recommend the RB Power Through Contact Drill. Set up 3-4 cones in a zig-zag pattern, spaced 5 yards apart. Have the RB start at the first cone and run through the course, focusing on keeping their shoulders square and driving their legs through contact. After completing the course, have them repeat the drill with a defender making contact at the second cone. Start with 3 sets of 5 reps, increasing to 5 sets of 10 reps as the player builds endurance. Coaching cues: 'Drive through the contact, don't let the defender stop you.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching RBs to maintain their speed and power through contact, allowing them to break tackles and gain extra yards.
