Improving OL Footwork with the 'Viking Shuffle' Drill
As the Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings prepare for the upcoming 5A season, their linemen will be putting in extra work to fine-tune their footwork. The 'Viking Shuffle' drill is a key component of their pre-season training, designed to improve agility, reaction time, and overall quickness. The drill involves setting up five cones in a zig-zag pattern, with the OL player starting at one end. The coach calls out a series of lateral shuffles, forward and backward runs, and 180-degree turns, requiring the player to rapidly change direction and accelerate. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet,' 'light on your toes,' and 'explosive acceleration.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing OL players to quickly react to defensive schemes and make split-second adjustments, giving them a competitive edge on the field.
