Building the Beast: A DE Drill for 6A Programs
At St. Joseph's Prep, Hawks defensive end coach, Mike Davis, has a go-to drill to develop the strength and agility needed to dominate on the edge. The 'Rack and Pinch' drill targets DEs' ability to explosively change direction and maintain leverage. Set up four cones in a square formation, 5 yards apart. Players start in a 3-point stance, 5 yards from the first cone. On the whistle, they sprint to the first cone, then immediately 'rack' their arms and change direction to pinch the second cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coach Davis emphasizes the importance of keeping the back foot firm and driving through the front foot. This drill translates to game performance by allowing DEs to quickly react to QBs' movements and maintain a strong position in the pocket. It's a must-have for any 6A program looking to build a dominant defensive line.
