Power Through Contact: A Drill for 5A Running Backs
Summer is the perfect time for running backs at 5A programs like Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings to focus on building power and explosiveness. The following drill will help RBs like Vikings' star back, develop the strength and speed needed to break tackles and gain extra yards after contact. Set up a series of 3-4 cones in a zig-zag pattern, spaced 5 yards apart. Have the RB start at the first cone and perform a 3-step drop, then immediately accelerate through the course, focusing on explosive hip drive and extension. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cue: 'Power through the first two steps, then let your hips take over.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching RBs to maintain balance and generate power through contact, allowing them to break tackles and gain extra yards.
