Tight End Training: Tollgate Titans' 3-Step Release Drill

๐Ÿ“ Tollgate TitansยทTuesday, July 7, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Tollgate Titans, our tight ends are working on a crucial skill: the 3-step release. This drill targets the ability to quickly separate from defenders and create space for a quarterback to deliver the ball. To set up, divide players into pairs with one defender and one receiver. The receiver starts 5 yards off the line, with the defender in a press position. On the coach's signal, the receiver takes 3 steps back, then quickly releases to the outside, using a combination of footwork and arm extension to create separation. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include: 'Step, step, step, release' and 'Keep your eyes up, find the hole.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing tight ends to quickly get open and create opportunities for big plays.
