Boosting Kickoff Coverage for 11AA Kicking Teams: The 'Rough Rider Shuffle' Drill
For 11AA kicking teams like the Roosevelt Rough Riders, kickoff coverage is a crucial aspect of their game plan. To improve their chances of pinning opponents deep, we've developed the 'Rough Rider Shuffle' drill. This high-intensity workout targets the speed, agility, and reaction time of kick coverage specialists. To run the drill, set up four cones in a zig-zag pattern, 10 yards apart. Have players start at the first cone and sprint to the second, then quickly change direction and shuffle to the third cone. From there, they'll sprint to the fourth cone and back to the start. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'stay low.' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time and allowing kick coverage specialists to quickly close gaps and make tackles.
