Explosive Edge Rush: A Drill for DII-AAA Defensive Ends
At DII-AAA programs like the MBA Trojans, defensive ends need to dominate on the edge. To develop that explosiveness, we're running a 3-round drill focused on speed, agility, and power. Round 1: Set up 5 cones in a zigzag pattern, 5 yards apart. Defensive ends will weave through the cones at maximum speed, focusing on quick changes of direction. 3 sets of 10 reps. Round 2: Add a medicine ball to the drill. Defensive ends will run through the cones, then explosively throw the medicine ball into a designated target. 3 sets of 10 reps. Round 3: Incorporate a reactive element. Defensive ends will run through the cones, then react to a coach's whistle by immediately changing direction and pursuing a 'ball carrier' (a teammate). 3 sets of 10 reps. This drill translates to game performance by improving speed, agility, and reaction time, allowing defensive ends to quickly close the gap and make game-changing plays.
