Kicker Prep: The 'Drop Step' Drill for 6A Programs

๐Ÿ“ North Shore MustangsยทFriday, July 24, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the 2026 season approaches, kickers at 6A programs like North Shore Mustangs are working on precision and power. The 'Drop Step' drill targets the key to a successful kick: balance and follow-through. Set up three cones in a row, 5 yards apart. Have the kicker start 5 yards back, then take 3 steps forward, dropping their back foot into a 45-degree angle. As they plant, focus on keeping the non-kicking foot in place. Release the ball, emphasizing a smooth, arcing motion. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cue: 'Plant and release, don't just drop.' This drill translates to game performance by improving balance and consistency on approach. It also enhances the kicker's ability to adjust to different angles and distances.
