Explosive Speed for RBs: The 3-Step Box Drill
At 6A programs like Prosper Eagles, speed and agility are crucial for running backs. To improve explosiveness, we recommend the 3-Step Box Drill. This drill targets quick acceleration, deceleration, and re-acceleration, translating to game performance. To set up: 3 boxes or cones spaced 5 yards apart. Start with a 10-yard sprint to the first box, then a 3-step approach to the second box, and finally a 3-step approach to the third box. After each box, perform a 3-step deceleration, planting the outside foot and keeping the inside foot moving. Repeat for 3 sets of 5 reps. Coaching cues: 'Quick feet, explosive acceleration,' and 'Slow down, then re-accelerate.' Focus on rapid changes of direction and maintaining top-end speed. This drill will help RBs like Prosper's star back, Tyler Johnson, dominate on the field.
