Shut Down Wideouts with Burlington Sea Horses' CB Drill
Defensive backs at top D-I programs like the Burlington Sea Horses are putting in the work this summer to stay ahead of the competition. One key drill that's been gaining traction is the 'Mirror and Match' exercise. This drill focuses on quick reactions and footwork, essential for shutting down wideouts in man coverage. Here's how to run it: Set up two cones 5 yards apart, with a defender starting at the line of scrimmage. The coach or trainer will throw a quick pass to a receiver, who will run a 5-yard out route. The defender must 'mirror' the receiver's movements, staying one step behind, and 'match' their speed. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cue: 'Stay one step ahead, not one step behind.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the defender's ability to stay with receivers in space and react quickly to changing angles.
