Raiders' Kicker Prep: Building Power and Accuracy with the 'Block and Release' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Rutland RaidersยทThursday, July 2, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Rutland Raiders' D-I summer camp, special teams coach Thompson emphasizes the importance of building power and accuracy in kickers. One of the key drills to achieve this is the 'Block and Release' exercise. To set up, have the kicker stand over a tee with a ball placed on it. The coach or trainer will then place a small block or pad on the ground in front of the kicker. The kicker must explosively block the pad with their foot, then immediately release the ball, focusing on a smooth, consistent follow-through. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the kicker's ability to generate power and maintain accuracy under pressure.
