FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Lock and Trail CB Drill
Defensive back coaches at D-III programs like Fair Haven Slaters are implementing a key drill to refine cornerbacks' (CB) ability to track receivers in man coverage. The Lock and Trail drill involves two players: a receiver and a cornerback. The receiver starts at the line of scrimmage, while the cornerback lines up 5 yards off. On the snap, the receiver runs a 5-yard out route, and the cornerback must 'lock' onto the receiver, staying tight and in phase. As the receiver trails out to the sideline, the cornerback must 'trail' the receiver, staying outside and in position to make a play on the ball. Coaches should focus on proper footwork and body positioning. Run 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving CBs' ability to stay with receivers on out routes and make plays on the ball.
