Raiders' Kicker Prep: Building Leg Strength with the 'Box Step' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Rutland RaidersยทWednesday, July 29, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Rutland Raiders' summer camp, special teams coach Alex Johnson emphasizes the importance of leg strength for kickers. To build explosive power, Johnson's team runs the 'Box Step' drill. Set up a series of 3-foot boxes or cones in a zig-zag pattern. Kicker starts at the first box, steps up with one foot, and then steps back down with the same foot before moving to the next box. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps with each leg. Coaching cues: 'Focus on quick turnover and explosive step-backs.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the kicker's ability to generate power and accuracy on kickoffs and extra points. By strengthening the legs, kickers can maintain consistency and drive through the ball.
