Boosting Kick Coverage: The '5-Step Shuffle' Drill for K-Patients

๐Ÿ“ George Washington PatriotsยทWednesday, July 1, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top AAA programs like George Washington Patriots, kick coverage units are always looking for ways to improve their speed and agility. One effective drill to add to your training regimen is the '5-Step Shuffle.' This exercise targets the quick changes of direction that kick coverage specialists need to make to stay onside. The drill involves 5 sets of 10 reps, with each set consisting of 5 steps in one direction (e.g. north) followed by 5 steps in the opposite direction (e.g. south). Coaching cues include 'keep your head up and eyes forward' and 'drive through your outside foot.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a player's ability to quickly close gaps and stay in position to make tackles. It's a must-add to your pre-season training plan.
