Tightening Up: A Drill for 4A TE's
For tight ends at 4A programs like Natrona County Mustangs, developing reliable hands and route-running skills is crucial. A drill to target these areas is the 'Route Box' exercise. Set up four cones in a 5-yard square, with one cone in each corner. Have the TE start at the center cone, then run to each corner, making a 5-yard cut to the cone while maintaining a high elbow and proper footwork. After completing the route, the TE should catch a pass from a quarterback while facing the cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaches should emphasize proper footwork, keeping the outside foot forward, and catching the ball with the fingertips. This drill translates to game performance by improving the TE's ability to create separation and secure catches in tight spaces.
