Boosting 4A Kickoff Coverage: The 'Bolts Blast' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Thunder Basin BoltsยทWednesday, July 22, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For K players at 4A programs like the Thunder Basin Bolts, a key area of focus is kickoff coverage. To improve their ability to track and tackle return specialists, Bolts coaches have developed the 'Bolts Blast' drill. This high-intensity workout consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players line up 10 yards deep, with a return specialist at the 25-yard line. The kicker kicks the ball, and the K player must chase down the return specialist, making a tackle or forcing a fair catch. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the ball' and 'stay disciplined on the angle.' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, speed, and tackling ability. By mastering the 'Bolts Blast' drill, K players can become more effective kickoff coverage specialists.
