Sprint and Slide Drill for Secondary Players

๐Ÿ“ Appoquinimink JaguarsยทSaturday, July 18, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top Div I programs like Appoquinimink Jaguars, coaches are fine-tuning their secondary players' speed and agility this summer. One effective drill is the sprint and slide combo. Set up four cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Players start at the first cone, sprint to the second, then immediately slide to the third, and finally sprint to the fourth. Complete 3 sets of 5 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet, long strides' during the sprint and 'keep your weight low, slide on your inside foot' during the slide. This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time and allowing players to quickly change direction, making them more effective in coverage.
