Speed and Agility for 8A S Players: The Zig-Zag Shuttle Drill

๐Ÿ“ IMG Academy AscendersยทSaturday, July 18, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For S players at top 8A programs like IMG Academy Ascenders, speed and agility are crucial components of their game. To improve their reaction time and acceleration, we recommend the zig-zag shuttle drill. This drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds of rest in between each set. Players will start at one end of a 20-yard zone, then run through a zig-zag pattern marked by cones, before changing direction and sprinting to the other end of the zone. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'stay low.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a player's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate in pursuit of the ball carrier. It also enhances their reaction time, allowing them to stay on the ball and make tackles.
