Lakeland Dreadnaughts' CB Coach Reveals Proven 'Shadow' Drill for 7A Success

๐Ÿ“ Lakeland DreadnaughtsยทSaturday, July 25, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To dominate 7A competition, cornerbacks need elite speed, agility, and reaction time. Lakeland Dreadnaughts' CB coach, Mark Smith, shares his go-to drill to develop these skills: the 'Shadow' drill. Set up cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart, with a defender at the starting point. A quarterback or coach throws a ball to the defender, who must quickly change direction to track the receiver. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Stay low, stay light, and stay on the receiver's hip.' This drill translates to game performance by replicating the quick changes of direction and reaction time required to stay with receivers in 7A competition. By mastering the 'Shadow' drill, CBs can gain a decisive edge in coverage.
