Shut Down the Competition: CB Drills for 4A Dominance
At Dowling Catholic Maroons football camps, cornerbacks are honing their skills with the 'Shadow Stance' drill. This high-intensity workout targets footwork, agility, and reaction time. To set up: divide players into pairs, with one player in a defensive stance and the other as a receiver. The receiver starts 5 yards deep, then sprints 3 yards to the left or right. The defender must mirror the receiver's movement, staying within 1 yard of their shadow. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, alternating sides. Coaching cues: 'Stay low, stay light, and stay with the receiver.' This drill translates to game performance by improving cornerbacks' ability to stay with receivers on out routes and quickly change direction to stay in coverage. By mastering the Shadow Stance, Dowling Catholic's CBs will be shutdown artists this season.
