Maximizing Tight End Potential with the 'Route Box' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Loyola Academy RamblersยทWednesday, July 1, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For 8A programs like Loyola Academy, developing a reliable tight end corps is crucial. The 'Route Box' drill is a valuable tool in refining their skills. Divide the tight ends into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. Set up a 10-yard box with cones, with each corner representing a different route (in, out, post, and deep). The receiver will start at the center of the box and will be given a specific route to run. The defender will be instructed to 'box out' the receiver, using their feet and hands to contain them within the designated area. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps on each route, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the tight end's ability to quickly read and adjust to coverage, as well as their spatial awareness and agility within the route structure.
