Summer WR Work: The '5-7-5' Route Drill
At 4A programs like John Curtis Patriots, WRs need to be precise and explosive on the field. To improve their route-running skills, we're introducing the '5-7-5' drill. This drill focuses on speed, agility, and ball-handling. Here's how to run it: Set up 5 cones in a zigzag pattern, 7 yards apart. Start at the first cone and sprint to the second (7 yards), then immediately change direction and sprint to the third (5 yards), and finally change direction again to the fourth cone (5 yards). Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Stay low, stay fast,' and 'Change of direction is key.' This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to quickly change direction and accelerate down the field. It also enhances their hand-eye coordination and reaction time, making them a threat on every play.
