Unlocking the Edge: Catholic High Bears DEs Get Ready for Season
This summer, 5A powerhouses like Catholic High Bears are fine-tuning their defensive line, and a key component of their prep is the 'Rapid Fire' drill. This intense exercise targets the quick-twitch muscles of defensive ends, mirroring the speed and agility required to rush the quarterback. To run the drill, set up four cones in a zigzag pattern, 10 yards apart. DEs will sprint through the course, changing direction on each cone. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Quick feet, quick hands,' emphasizing the need for rapid acceleration and hand placement. This drill translates to game performance by allowing DEs to develop the speed and agility needed to beat blockers and get to the quarterback. It's a must-include in any DE's pre-season training regimen.
