Summer Speed Work for S Players: The 3-Cone Shuttle Drill

๐Ÿ“ Muskegon Big RedsยทThursday, July 9, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At Muskegon Big Reds and other Division 2 programs, speed is a key component of defensive back success. To improve their agility and reaction time, S players can focus on the 3-Cone Shuttle Drill. This drill consists of three 5-yard cones set up in an L-shape. Players start at the top of the L, then weave through the first cone, make a sharp cut to the second cone, and finally change direction to the third cone. They repeat this sequence for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaches can provide cues such as 'stay low' and 'keep your eyes up' to emphasize proper technique. This drill translates to game performance by improving a player's ability to quickly change direction and cover receivers in man-to-man coverage.
