FridayNightPulse Training Tip: RB Power Through Contact Drill
At the 5A level, running backs like West Point's Green Wave need to be able to power through contact and maintain top-end speed. To improve this skill, coaches can implement the RB Power Through Contact Drill. Players will perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. The drill involves a 10-yard dash down the sideline, followed by a 5-yard cut to the inside, and finally a 5-yard power run through a tackling pad or sled. Coaching cues include keeping the head up, driving through the legs, and extending the hips. This drill translates to game performance by improving a back's ability to break tackles and gain extra yards after contact. It also enhances their overall speed and agility. By incorporating this drill into their summer training, RBs can gain a competitive edge at the 5A level.
