Explosive Acceleration: A RB Drill for 6A Programs
At 6A programs like Centennial Hawks, developing explosive acceleration is crucial for running backs to break tackles and gain yards after contact. To improve this aspect of their game, coaches can implement the 'Resistance Band Shuttle Drill'. This drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest in between sets. Players start at the line of scrimmage, wearing resistance bands around their legs. On the whistle, they explosively accelerate 5 yards downfield, then immediately change direction and shuttle back to the starting point. Coaching cues include 'quick feet, fast hands' and 'drive through the ground'. This drill translates to game performance by improving a RB's ability to rapidly change direction and generate force, allowing them to break tackles and gain extra yards. By incorporating this drill into their pre-season training, RBs can gain a competitive edge.
