Westfield Bulldogs' WR Coach Reveals Game-Changing Drill for 6A Programs
This summer, Westfield Bulldogs' WR coach, Mike Johnson, is emphasizing a drill that targets the quick release and separation of his receivers. The 'Route Runner's Rodeo' involves setting up three cones in a triangular formation, with the player starting at the apex. Coach Johnson instructs the player to sprint to the first cone, then make a 90-degree cut to the second cone, before finally accelerating to the third cone. The player repeats this sequence for 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet, quick hands' and 'release the ball before the defender can react.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the receiver's ability to create separation and get open quickly, making them a more effective target for their quarterback.
