Tight End Training: Oscar Smith Tigers' 6A-Ready Route Running Drill
Get your tight ends game-ready with this intense route running drill, inspired by the Oscar Smith Tigers' pre-season training regimen. This drill targets the key skills of speed, agility, and route recognition, essential for dominating 6A competition. To set up, divide your tight ends into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. Set up a 10-yard route tree with three cones: one at 5 yards, one at 7 yards, and one at 10 yards. Have the receiver start at the 5-yard cone and run a 5-yard out route, then quickly transition to a 3-yard in route, and finally finish with a 2-yard hook route. The defender must stay on their feet and mirror the receiver's movements. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues: 'Stay low,' 'Keep your eyes on the defender,' and 'Quick feet.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the tight end's ability to create separation and make plays in traffic.
