Malik Johnson Commits to SMU
Highland Springs Springers running back Malik Johnson, a Class of 2025 standout, has committed to play for the SMU Mustangs. Johnson, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound back, chose SMU over other offers from Virginia Tech and Louisville. The Springers' workhorse averaged 8.5 yards per carry and scored 14 touchdowns in 2023, earning him All-District honors. Johnson's commitment to SMU is a testament to the program's ability to adapt to his skillset, as the Mustangs employ a pro-style offense that emphasizes power running. With the departure of several key backs from last year's roster, Johnson is expected to compete for a prominent role in the SMU backfield. Additionally, SMU's strong academic program and reputation for producing well-rounded student-athletes were major factors in Johnson's decision. Johnson had initially committed to Virginia Tech in 2023 but decommitted in February 2024 to explore other options.
