DE Prospects: What Coaches Look for on Junior Day Visits

๐Ÿ“ Oscar Smith TigersยทThursday, July 30, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As a top defensive end prospect at a 6A program like Oscar Smith, you're likely to be invited to junior day visits at Power Five schools. But what do coaches look for during these visits? First, they want to see your athleticism. Can you change direction quickly? Can you explosively accelerate off the line? Coaches will often put you through drills that test your speed, agility, and reaction time. For example, they may have you perform a 3-cone drill, where you must navigate a zigzag course in 6.5 seconds or less. This drill assesses your ability to quickly change direction and accelerate. Additionally, coaches will evaluate your technique, particularly your pass-rush moves and ability to set the edge. Be prepared to demonstrate your skills and show coaches why you're a top DE prospect.
