Summer WR Camp: 'Flash' Drill for Separation and YAC
At top programs like St. Marys Blue Devils, wide receivers are constantly looking for ways to separate from defenders and create explosive plays. One drill that has been effective in achieving this goal is the 'Flash' drill. This high-intensity exercise involves a series of short sprints (10-15 yards) with a focus on rapid acceleration and deceleration. Coaches will set up a series of cones or markers to create a zig-zag course, and receivers will perform 5 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Flash' on the start of each sprint, emphasizing the need for immediate acceleration, and 'Slow Down' at the end of each sprint, focusing on controlled deceleration. This drill translates to game performance by improving a receiver's ability to quickly separate from defenders and change direction on a dime, leading to more yards after the catch and bigger plays down the field.
