Thunder Basin Bolts' Kicker Prep: The 3-Step Approach

๐Ÿ“ Thunder Basin BoltsยทFriday, July 3, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

The Thunder Basin Bolts' special teams coach, Mark Johnson, emphasizes the importance of developing a consistent kicking game. One drill that has proven effective in pre-season training is the 3-Step Approach. This drill targets the kicker's balance, alignment, and follow-through. To set up the drill, mark three cones in a straight line, 3 yards apart. The kicker starts behind the first cone, takes 3 steps forward, and kicks the ball through the second cone. The kicker then recovers and repeats the process, focusing on proper balance and alignment. Coach Johnson recommends 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the kicker's ability to maintain balance and generate power on shorter kicks.
